Really? Really?!
Following last years, or this years depending how you look at it, Academy Awards was a frustrating experience, but not for the reasons you think. Of course the wrong things win (Slumdog). Of course the right things do not even get nominated (Dark Knight). I am not here to camp out in Academy award past, instead I want to address Slumdog Millionaire, but again not for the reasons that you think. Every year, NAY every month a movie comes out that really gets people, friends, parents, or critics excited about the cinematic world in which we live. "Did you see Little Miss Sunshine?! Alan Arkin really just captured the everyday life of a heroin drug addict grandfather...what a charming slice of life!" Or "Wow, Slumdog Millionaire really opened my eyes to the plight of India in the face of Globalization!" Sure enough, every year and/or every month that same film irritates the living tar out of me. Remember that Seinfeld episode? Where everyone keeps talking about the English Patient. Not only that, but keeps forcing Elaine to see it again and again? This and other posts like it, hope to deal with the English Patients living among us. Together we can route out the films that unfortunately take the praise and run! Or I can..and you can comment.
Keep an eye out for the first recipient of "The English Patient Award" soon to be renamed the "Slumdog Millionaire Award".
