What I really wanted to talk about is how incredible sports statistics are. The amount of statistical analysis and data available to us is unbelievable. Anything you could ever imagine wanting to know. What I'd like to focus on right now is this guy John Hollinger from ESPN. Hollinger has what he calls the Player Efficiency Rating (PER). According to the PER rankings LeBron James is having an historic season. When I say historic I do not mean one of the better seasons in the last couple years, I'm talking one of the top 2 seasons in the last 35 years. According to statistics John Hollinger has compiled in to is PER formulas all the way back to the 1972-1973 season Michael Jordan has had the greatest season since 1972-73 (the PER formula necessitates turnover stats which weren't recorded on an individual basis until the '72-'73 season). His PER number was 31.89, in a season which had the incredible line of 35 points 5.5 rebounds 5.9 assists in 40.4 minutes per game. Those numbers show unparalleled scored, defense and ball distribution skills. In history only 1 player has broken 31 points on the PER scale (Jordan 4 times). This season LeBron has a 31.69 PER. Hollinger goes on in more depth about how impressive James's stats really are.
