January 4th, 2012; Sanity in college football?
Everyone knows that the BCS is a crapshoot, there is no denying that. Sometimes we forget though that BCS is not the end all be all to name the national champion. As recently as 1997 the AP national championship was just as well regarded and important as the BCS is now. In fact there are six polls that can name a national champion (AP, USA TOday Coaches poll, College football researchers association, Football Writers Association of America, National Football Foundation, and the Sporting News). Currently the USA Today Coaches poll, and the NFF are contractually obligated to award the title to the BCS champion. The AP still has (and did so in 2003) voted for a National Champion that did not play in the BCS title game.
